This week we catch up with visual artist Giulia Marsico, also known as Scientwehst. We talk about confidence, art and the female form.
Tell us about yourself and how you got to where you are today?
“Persistence and patience! I’ve always gone the more traditional route when it comes to evolving.”
As an artist, you used to focus on the body. Have you always been interested in the female form and where does the inspiration for your work come from?
“It’s been over 3 years since I’ve done those collages! I’m not working on those pieces anymore but I have been trying out new mediums and it’s been super fun. I recently got into hand tufting rugs, sculpture, and a little bit of painting.”
What can you tell us about your relationship with your own body and how that has changed over the years?
“Our body is always changing. We are always changing. I’ve just gotten bored with hating or wishing I had a different body type, and started appreciating it for everything is does for me every day."
Your social media presence is one of openness, freedom and confidence whilst celebrating who you are. Is that something you always set out to do and what would you say to anyone trying to find out who they are?
“Of course, but there are days when I don’t feel confident or my best. But, I accept how I feel without judgment or at least I’m really trying to. Even If I’m not feeling the most confident, or open, I’ll sit in my feelings and analyse why instead of trying to immediately soothe. I would say, try to not deny yourself or place shame on the feelings you have. The truth will surface if you’re honest with yourself, and lean into the real feelings you have, don’t suppress them.”
What makes you feel good or boost your confidence when you need it most?
“Being active! Working out, getting a good sweat in.”
Are you able to share anything you have coming up this year?
“I’m working on a book of my collage work! Stay tuned.”
