Extend the lifespan of your bra

Our bras and bralettes are designed to fit and flatter for everyday wear. We believe your lingerie should be both exciting and comfortable enough to wear for all occasions. To ensure your bra lasts as long as possible, our Founder, Georgia, has shared her five top tips.

Fasten it correctly

“How you put on and fasten your bra is important. Many women might be surprised to hear this and lots of us are probably guilty of fastening our bras at the front of our torso and spinning it round to the back, but this can be bad for your bra. It can cause the underwire to pop out, stretch out your bra and distort the cup shape.  Instead, start by slipping the straps on, then fasten the clasp at your back and ensure your breasts are sitting comfortably, adjusting them if needed.”

Tighten over time

“Another common mistake women make is to wear their bra on the tightest fastening when they first buy it. You should avoid doing this for a few reasons. Your bra will inevitably stretch over time and the hook fasten is actually designed to help you tighten your bra to compensate for this stretch. By starting on the loosest hook, you can gradually move to tighter and tighter hooks, as your bra starts to feel slack.

Another reason for starting on the loosest hook is to ensure your bra is not too tight and causing any discomfort. A tight bra can dig in and cause back pain, sore shoulders and unflattering ‘overspill’. Starting your hook on the loosest setting will ensure you look and feel great, no matter how long you’ve had your bra!”

Wash with care

“As with all delicate items, you should ideally wash your bras by hand, but it’s ok to also put in the machine, as long as it’s on a gentle wash and the temperature is no more than 30 degrees. If hand washing, we recommend using tepid water and a little natural detergent to clean your bras – this is the gentlest way to remove any stains or odours and avoids the risk of any snagging in a washing machine. But if you do use the machine, make sure to put the lingerie in a wash bag, as this will prevent any snagging.”

Drying techniques

“Probably one of the worst things you can do is hang your bra by one of its straps to dry, this will pull down on the strap, causing it to stretch more than the other. Similarly, draping your bra over a warm radiator to dry is also a no-no. The best technique to make your bra last is to pat it dry after washing then lay it flat – this evenly distributes its weight and avoids stretching. If you’re short on space, hanging your bra on a coat hanger is also a great way to dry it.”

Wear. Rotate. Repeat.

“We recommend that you rotate your bra, to allow it to recover and tighten in between wears. Dora Larsen bras are designed to be worn every day, but to keep yours in tip top condition, we’d suggest that you switch it up after three days, leaving it to tighten back into shape ready to make you feel fab next time you slip it on.”

It’s a myth that you need to replace your bra every 6 months. As long as you care for them and wear them consciously – you should be able to extend the lifespan of your bras and enjoy them for longer.
